John Wetten Elementary students emerged as champions during Oregon Battle of the Books, a statewide reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. The battle's mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.
In fifth-grade teacher Michelle Aker’s “Jade Dragons,” our winners were Alexandra Shipman, Avery Yates, Benny Ruehle, Chloe Laiviere, Laney Emerson and Logan Cole. Fourth-grade winners in Amy Hanno’s class included Brock Esperanza, Harper Berreth, Kichu Yadessa, Mariah Taylor and Jaylen Browning on the "Wild Chocolateers" team. Gladstone students won the contest by correctly answering a series of questions about some of their favorite books.
